Through my work at Liverpool, I have a lot of experience working with quasicrystals. The group there, led by Ronan McGrath and Hem Raj Sharma, is the leading experimental group in the UK working on these fascinating materials. Dan Shechtman, who discovered these materials, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011 for his discovery.
These materials have five-fold or ten-fold axes of symmetry, in direct contradiction to crystallographic rules prior to their discovery, and have strong relationships with the Fibonacci sequence and the Penrose tilings. Here is a link to my PhD thesis on Scribd and here is my profile on Google Scholar, where you can explore some of the research I have done on these materials.
